Optical illusion Louis Vuitton trainers spark fierce debate over whether they are white or black - but what colour do YOU see?

It is the question that divided the internet: is the dress white and gold, or blue and black? But now there's a new optical illusion baffling social media users across the nation.
Gino, believed to be from the UK, shared a photo of a pair of Louis Vuitton trainers to Twitter and penned: 'Twitter are these white or black because all I see is white?'
The controversial image, which has since gone viral and sparked a fierce online debate, has split social media users in two, with many arguing over what colour they see.
'I don't know how anyone is seeing anything other than black,' wrote one, while a second penned: 'White is the only right answer.'

A third added: 'I could only see black and couldn't figure out how they were possibly white, but now I see white and I can't see black anymore wtf.'
And some took to the comments section to suggest the possible reasons people may be seeing different colours.
'White shoes, with glow in the dark pattern. Picture taken with the lights off,' commented one, while a second penned: 'They’re white in a dark room.'
A third agreed: 'They're just white trainers in the dark. I don't get why people are confused,' while a further commented: They're white. Just no light.'
Meanwhile, others suggested the way in which social media users see the colour of the trainers depends on the brightness of their phones.
'I reckon they're white but the brightness is turned down and the Louis Vuitton pattern is tricking your eyes. But at first glance I saw black,' admitted one, while a second agreed: 'Just change the brightness and you can tell they’re white.'

A third commented: 'Depends how high my brightness is turned up on my phone. I usually have it quite dark so I see black, if I turn my brightness up to full then I can just about make it as a dirty white.'
Despite several theories floating around, those who could see the shoes as black remained adamant of their opinion.
'Black with white patterns,' wrote one, while a second penned: 'Fully black for me with White LV logo.'
The debate is reminiscent of the two-toned frock debate, which saw users taking to social media to argue over what colours they could see - white and gold or blue and black.
The picture of the dress was first posted on Tumblr by Caitlin McNeill, a 21-year-old aspiring singer from Scotland, after noticing her friends saw different colours in the photograph.
The image became an online sensation, with posts arguing over the dress's original colours. Even celebrities weighed in on the fashion debate, with Kim Kardashian asking her 29.4million Twitter followers to help settle a disagreement between herself and husband Kanye West.

Others argued the trainers are clearly white, but the picture has just been taken with the light off (pictured)

Attention Sneakerheads: Louis Vuitton Debuts A Sneaker Trunk

Any diehard sneakerhead will tell you that you can’t simply line up your kicks at the back of your closet. Thanks to Louis Vuitton, the most sophisticated way to store your sneaks has arrived: Their sneaker trunk. The storied fashion house is presenting its worldwide debut in Miami at the Savoir-Faire event on December 3, coinciding with Design Miami.

The hard-sided sneaker trunk is special order only. The piece is designed to fit at least six pairs of low-tops and eight pairs of high-top sneakers, up to a size 13 and 12, respectively. In the tradition of Louis Vuitton, the trunk is completely customizable and can be personalized any way the client pleases, meaning it goes beyond a simple monogram—you can get practically anything painted on it.

Of course, you’ll need something new to put in that trunk, so at the same time Louis Vuitton is releasing the global launch of their 408 Global Trainers from Virgil Abloh. The exclusive shoes are launching in just nine cities across the globe, in only New York and Chicago stateside. Diehards will know exactly where you snagged your pair because each has a different colored luggage tag: Chicago’s is bright orange and New York’s is dark blue. The latest sneakers and the trunk embody how Louis Vuitton is mingling street style with true craftsmanship and heritage.

Trump went on to address a crowd at the plant for a ribbon cutting ceremony.
'This workshop will soon employ 500 of the most highly skilled workers anywhere in the world,' Trump said.
'No one can match the precision and perfection of an American artisan.'
During his speech, he heaped praise on his daughter and son-in-law and made them stand so the crowd could applaud them.
Trump said Ivanka was 'responsible for 14 million jobs this year'.
Following the tour, Trump was scheduled to headline a campaign rally in Dallas.
Trump began his trip to Texas on Thursday at a fundraiser in Fort Worth that raised about $5.5 million for Trump Victory, a joint fundraising committee benefiting the Trump campaign and the Republican National Committee.
The Texas visit comes at a critical time for Trump, whose dealings with the president of Ukraine are the subject of a quickly unfolding impeachment inquiry run by House Democrats.
While Republicans have largely defended Trump, they have sounded alarms over his decision to pull U.S. troops out of northeast Syria - a move that paved the way for Turkey to invade and assault the Kurds, who'd fought alongside the U.S. in its campaign against Islamic State militants.

Upon landing in Texas on Thursday, Trump credited his threat of sanctions on Turkey and the violence that has taken place for the announcement of a cease-fire, though critics say Trump green-lit the incursion and put the Kurdish forces in danger by announcing a U.S. troop withdrawal.
Trump described the cease-fire as an 'incredible outcome' that could not have occurred 'unless you went somewhat unconventional.'
A White House meeting between Trump and congressional lawmakers to discuss the situation devolved into an insult-fest on Wednesday, with the president calling Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi a 'third-grade politician' and Pelosi storming out.
Trump and Pelosi continued to trade jabs after the meeting, with each accusing the other of having a meltdown.
Texas is an important state for Republicans.
Trump carried the Republican stronghold and its 38 Electoral College votes by 9 points in 2016. But Democrats have pointed to demographic trends as well as the fact that Republican Sen. Ted Cruz won reelection by just over 2 points last year as evidence that the second-most-populous state could soon be in play.
Trump's campaign and the RNC have been raking in money, raising a record $125 million in the third quarter of this year.
By comparison, former President Barack Obama and the Democratic National Committee raised just over $70 million in the third quarter of 2011 for his reelection campaign.

Secondhand luxury in Dubai eyes a slice of multi-billion dollar business

(CNN) — A new fashion season, a new set of must-have pieces. The inevitable wardrobe purge. But what's unwanted by one will find a happy home with another -- and this corner of the market is becoming a hotly contested battleground for the luxury industry.A report by US online reseller ThredUp claims the apparel resale market was worth $20 billion in 2017, with the potential to rise to $41 billion by 2022. According to Crunchbase, ThredUp and luxury resellers Vestiaire Collective and The RealReal have each received venture capital funding well over $100 million. The Luxury Closet secured an additional $8.7 million in funding last month, taking the pre-owned luxury company's funding total to over $20 million since it began in 2011. Based in Dubai, they're one of a handful of operators including Garderobe and Shedd bucking the emirate's box-fresh image. And what's helping these businesses is the sheer abundance of luxury to hand."It's a fantastic area," says Kunal Kapoor, CEO of The Luxury Closet. "(The Middle East has) the second-highest average value closet in the world. There's a lot of supply out there."According to figures from market research provider Euromonitor International, the UAE has the fourth-largest market for luxury goods per capita in the world (behind Singapore in third, Hong Kong, China, second and Switzerland, first).

Micha Maatouk, managing director of "pre-loved" luxury boutique Garderobe, believes the trend for offloading and selling high-end closet items can be traced back to the global financial crisis. "It was a tough time in Dubai -- all over the world I think -- in 2008-2010," she says. "When we thought about opening this business, part of it was because people weren't spending in the same way as they used to on luxury."
Dubai unveils plans for $2 billion tech-driven mega mallMaatouk, previously a manager at Chanel, set up a brick and mortar store in 2010 on the beachfront in the Jumeirah area, away from Dubai's mega-malls. She describes discreet "hush hush" buyers, not wanting to be seen purchasing secondhand goods, but says shoppers are more open to the idea than when she began."Bear in mind this is a culture -- and I include ex-pats in this too -- that, when it comes to fashion, still very much values the new," notes Olivia Phillips, digital editor of Grazia Middle East. But Phillips also says some consumers "are taking a much more mindful approach to shopping, and a global move towards sustainability has meant that wearing pre-owned fashion is now as much a badge of honor or a signifier of virtue as much as it is about looking good."
Garderobe's Dubai store in the Jumeirah area.
Garderobe's Dubai store in the Jumeirah area.

Both Garderobe and The Luxury Closet act as a broker, authenticating, photographing and storing items for sellers. Each posts listings online, The Luxury Closet on an app too, with the companies taking a percentage on the value of items when sold.
"We have about 22,000 unique units online and we're uploading nearly $5 million of inventory a month," Kapoor says. Garderobe keeps around 3,000 items in its store and up to 10,000 online, says Maatouk. At the time of writing, the most expensive item listed on The Luxury Closet was a gray ostrich leather Hermes Birkin bag, on sale for over $52,000.
While supply is driven by Emiratis, buyers come from all over the world. Maatouk estimates Garderobe has shipped to approximately 30 countries and The Luxury Closet says it has delivered to 89.

Access is a large part of the appeal, Kapoor explains. Pre-owned is the opportunity to buy what might otherwise be impossible, in terms of cost or availability. Kapoor previously worked for Louis Vuitton and says that many luxury brands keep certain lines offline. (Chanel, for example, does not sell its ready-to-wear collections on its website.)
So is this business model any more egalitarian? And what do the big-name labels think?
"What's interesting is that this is a market that the brands themselves can't necessarily control," says Sue Rissbrook, UK head of retail at PricewaterhouseCoopers, a professional services network.
"The brands themselves are obviously hugely concerned about fake products, and that is where they're always paying attention," she adds. (A report by Research and Markets estimated global losses incurred by luxury brands due to online counterfeits alone exceeded $30 billion in 2017.)

In fact, some retailers appear to be eyeing this secondary luxury market with relish. Recently Richemont, the Swiss parent company of watch brands including Cartier, Jaeger-LeCoultre and Piaget, bought Watchfinder, a UK-based online and shop-based seller of secondhand timepieces.
"If you're a big online business and you already sell these big brands at full price, brand new, why not also offer your clients the possibility to recycle?" comments Maatouk. "They close the loop."
Kapoor says The Luxury Closet has already signed a few partnerships, although did not divulge the retailers' names. Maatouk says that Garderobe is also in talks with different partners.
There's clearly room to grow. "Pre-owned is less than 1% of retail sales (in the Middle East)," says Kapoor, citing data from consulting firm Delta Partners.
"The thirst for pre-owned fashion is on the up, but I wouldn't say it's exploding quite yet," cautions Phillips. "But, like so many things in Dubai, tastes, interests, movement and styles are fast evolving -- and that's exactly why it's such an exciting place to be right now."

The Best Designer Bags to Buy Now and Sell Later

Designer handbags are expensive: This is a fact. And that many shoppers prefer to pay less than the original retail price for them is another. Fortunately, there are a lot of places to do that online.
Resale itself is a billion-dollar industry; the annual revenue is an estimated $17 billion, and the category of handbags is particularly lucrative. High-end consignment sites like The RealReal and Vestaire Collective are owning this space, and making it incredibly simple (and more secure) to shop for pre-owned designer bags online, with the same type of customer service experience you’d find at any other reputable e-commerce site. Secondhand shopping has come a long way in the past few years.
So what’s worth your investment? Here, we asked Graham Wetzbarger, The RealReal’s senior director of authentication, which bags you should consider buying now if you’re looking to resell later.

What are some of the most popular bags on The RealReal right now? What are people going crazy for, or showing an increased interest in?
There are always going to be some staples: the iconic brands that are always in fashion, both on the high end and on the low end. The biggest names are Chanel, Hermès, and Louis Vuitton. Those always have really high demand; they’re iconic, and because of their very high price point, people really seek them out on the secondary market.
Last year, Mansur Gavriel was huge, but now the bags sit for a few days. They still sell, but the sense of urgency is a little less than what it was. We’ve seen other brands come up and come down. Sometimes it has more to do with the silhouette and brands that cater to that silhouette. We’re seeing a big spike in Kate Spade right now, because they do a lot of really youthful and colorful bags. They also do tons of crossbody, just like Rebecca Minkoff. They’re an accessible price point, and the color palette is suited toward spring and summer. When people want a seasonal bag, they’re not going to go too expensive.
MCM is also really coming up. We’re seeing a customer who’s more street-style-driven than luxury Fifth-Avenue-driven, who’s loving cool sneakers and MCM backpacks and bags and baseball caps. Even some of these vintage MCM bags are doing really well.

A Delvaux bag.

What other shapes are big?
I think Lady bags — with a nice, sophisticated, gorgeous top handle — are back, and have been for a while. You see these from Delvaux, they’re gorgeous; Valextra has many that are stunning. And then the backpack is back, so hard. Everyone from Chanel to Mansur Gavriel and so many brands in between — everyone wants a backpack, and everyone is doing a backpack.
What are some of the best bags to buy now that’ll be worth the investment later on?
You can’t go wrong with Louis Vuitton monogram canvas. Not only is it very durable, but it holds its value, probably 70 percent of what you paid for it. And then when you consider the brand increases prices 10 percent every year, that’s a great ROI.
Something on the more entry-level price point is harder, because they tend to go on sale. Department stores will put things on sale seasonally, so you can get them retail at a lower price point. And there are just so many more of them made, so the secondary market gets a little bit flooded. You’re never going to get a really strong ROI on something like that — it needs to be slightly less approachable and more covetable than a mass brand. Finding those brands that don’t go on sale, have smaller production, and have bags that are very publicized are always going to have staying power.
Also, there are some silhouettes, even in Louis Vuitton, that wax and wane depending on what the house is doing now. These houses and these brands that have lots of history and deep archives are often pulling and resurrecting styles that have been out of production for a while, so that really has an influence and effect on the secondary market and on vintage items that are similar.

A close up of a pink Chanel bag and pink coat Photo: Christian Vierig/Getty Images

How long should you hang onto a designer bag before selling it?
In general, I always say a year. If you keep your bag for a year, it’s still going to be in great shape and still relatively on trend. And if it does have some spin of seasonality to it, in a year you’ll be back in that same season as when you bought it.
Sometimes, we can feel a trend before the data shows it. About four or five months ago, we kept getting more and more Rockstud Pumps from Valentino every day. At first we were like, “Awesome!” and then we were like, “Wow,” and then we were like, “Uh oh...” The data always comes a month later. So intuitively, that means it’s time to clear your Rockstuds. When the data starts showing that their velocity has slowed down and they’re taking longer to sell and the selling price point has gone down as well, that’s the sign that this trend is over.
Just like with technology, being an early adopter always helps. Trust your instincts. If you see something and you like it, go for it. If you start seeing a lot of other people carrying it or that style being replicated by other designers, you know it’s at its peak, and that’s a great time to part with your goods — before the trend is over. It’s just over-saturation. Mansur launched the bucket bag and it was huge, and every other designer started doing a bucket bag. It was popular for a minute, and there are a ton out there. So while there aren’t as many Mansurs, there are a ton of other facsimiles. So it just slows down and kind of kills the trend.

How is this even possible you ask?  It's economics my Dear Watson!  With the fall of the Brittish pound back in June, dropping more than 17% against the American dollar - actually has some benefits. The cost of luxury goods, for the itme being, cost less in the UK after the conversion.
According to research by Deloitte, the Speedy 30 Louis Vuitton handbag is $802 in London, compared with $850 in Paris, $970 in New York, and $1,115 in China.  All relative o course.

"The trend in luxury pricing in the U.K. is being driven mainly by the depression in sterling – thus making the same item more affordable in the U.K. market than any other major luxury market," Nick Pope, the head of fashion and luxury at Deloitte, told the BBC.
‘People don’t like paying more for the same product.’
In fact, it’s said that 64% of comparable luxury goods are now cheapest in the UK.
